Fall Outdoor Home Maintenance Honey-Do Checklist

Summer’s come and gone–and left its mark outside the house.

Outside the house tend to these autumn chores:

If you have a sunroom, no worries about storing your furnishings. But outside the sunroom, there is plenty to do.

Outdoor Maintenance Tasks:

  1. Clean and store patio furniture, umbrellas, and children’s summer toys.
  2. Touch up paint on trim, railings and decks. Use a wire brush to remove flaking paint; prime bare wood first.
  3. Check caulk around windows and doors. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations to re-caulk if needed.
  4. Inspect external doors and garage doors. Do they close tightly? Install weather-stripping, door thresholds if needed.
  5. Wash exterior windows. Store your screens, if you are able, to allow more winter light through your nice clean windows.
  6. Drain and store garden hoses. Install insulating covers on exterior spigots. In hard-freeze areas, have sprinkler systems blown free of water.
  7. Check gutters and downspouts. Clear of debris if necessary. In cold-weather areas, consider installing heating cable to prevent ice dams.
  8. Have chimneys and flues inspected and cleaned if necessary.
