Stocks up up up

The Dow’s new high is “important from a psychological standpoint,” says Andres Garcia-Amaya, global market strategist for JP Morgan Funds.  I agree!  And  with interest rates are at ultra-low levels, thanks to the Fed’s bond-buying program to stimulate borrowing and job creating, let’s hope for a boost in the home improvement market as well.  Homeowners who have tabled their wish list may take it off the shelf, looking for outdoor projects to boost their spirits this spring.  It’s a great time to re-visit those higher ticket items, like patios, decks, sunrooms, ponds or pergolas – projects that will improve your outlook and your lifestyle, but that people shied away from over the past several years.  Home improvement companies, anxious to book projects through the building season, should  have  attractive pricing this month.

Betterliving® Releases Sunroom Benefits Infographic to Educate Homeowners

Betterliving’s new “Benefits of a Sunroom” infographic is based on customer survey responses and online research.

Summer may be over, but there’s always time to reap the benefits of a sunroom. Sunroom benefits go beyond just looks and appearance. To illustrate the various benefits of a sunroom, Betterliving Sunrooms, a Craft-Bilt Manufacturing Company that specializes in home improvement products, created the Benefits of a Sunroom infographic. Based on Betterliving’s customer feedback and industry leading websites, the infographic highlights several reasons why a sunroom is beneficial:

  • Creates an affordable added living space
  • Saves energy by capturing natural light
  • Benefits health with fresh air, which can be a stress reducer

Sunrooms are an affordable way to add extra space to a home, thus increasing the home’s overall value. Sunrooms can also help save cost on energy bills by capturing the warmth and light of the sun. In addition, sunrooms benefit health by bringing in fresh air and sunshine which are natural stress reducers. Betterliving Sunrooms are the most affordable home improvement option, listed at under $20,000, when compared to a garage addition or a basement remodel.

Andy Stone, President of Craft-Bilt Manufacturing Company, says, “Very often, the first home improvement that is made by a home buyer is adding a deck. Once they have the deck, they rarely use it. Do they use it when it rains? When it’s too windy? Too sunny? Too cold? At night? When there is snow on the deck? So when can they use it? Only on calm clear days when the temperature is not too hot and not too cold. We can fix that for them. Everyone who has a deck needs a sunroom if they want to get significant use out of it. Why would you pay five or ten thousand dollars for something that you can’t use?”

Fall Outdoor Home Maintenance Honey-Do Checklist

Summer’s come and gone–and left its mark outside the house.

Outside the house tend to these autumn chores:

If you have a sunroom, no worries about storing your furnishings. But outside the sunroom, there is plenty to do.

Outdoor Maintenance Tasks:

  1. Clean and store patio furniture, umbrellas, and children’s summer toys.
  2. Touch up paint on trim, railings and decks. Use a wire brush to remove flaking paint; prime bare wood first.
  3. Check caulk around windows and doors. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations to re-caulk if needed.
  4. Inspect external doors and garage doors. Do they close tightly? Install weather-stripping, door thresholds if needed.
  5. Wash exterior windows. Store your screens, if you are able, to allow more winter light through your nice clean windows.
  6. Drain and store garden hoses. Install insulating covers on exterior spigots. In hard-freeze areas, have sprinkler systems blown free of water.
  7. Check gutters and downspouts. Clear of debris if necessary. In cold-weather areas, consider installing heating cable to prevent ice dams.
  8. Have chimneys and flues inspected and cleaned if necessary.

Betterliving Sunroom Rises after the flood

Fran and her husband in New York were devastated to lose their house in the flooding following the hurricanes and tropical storms last fall…but were relieved that their sunroom (aka the “Man Cave”) survived.  Contractors disassembled the sunroom and stored it until their damaged house was replaced with a new manufactured home.  In a few days, the “sunroom that survived” will be re-erected on their new home.  Our best wishes go out to Fran and her family, that their long ordeal will soon be over and that they have many new flood-free years in their new home – and their re-newed sunroom!

Great Customer Service!

I was so pleased to see this note to Amy in our Customer Satisfacation Department… from a homeowner she assisted with a broken window …. It is our mission statement personified: Enthusiastic Employees….Flawless Performance…Delighted Customers!

Amy,

As you are now aware, the glass is the “single”. I have it in my vehicle and will install when I get home tonight. Thanks again for all of your help. The quality of the customer experience I had from you and the other employees at the warehouse is impressive and appreciated. I debate with my friends that this level of service still exists and they tell me that I am full of it. You have given me solid proof that the customer perspective is first and foremost at Craft-Bilt.  Thank you!

Tips for Cleaning Your Deck With a Power Washer

Time to Clean Your Deck around Your Sunroom

Since we have had beautiful weather this summer, I am sure most homeowners are using their sunrooms and decks to entertain.  With this in mind, does your deck around your sunroom have stains from food and drinks or footprints from muddy shoes?  Before using your power washer, here is some advice from Flat Andy’s structural engineer, Craig Joss, PE.

Meta Silicate and Sodium Hydroxide are commonly used to power wash decks, but these chemicals can be harmful to your sunroom.  When power washing your deck, DO NOT use these chemicals, since they can soften the factory-applied coating and attack the mill finish aluminum at cut edges and screw holes.

So what materials are safe to use on pre-painted metal surfaces used for sunrooms? According to Nichols Aluminum Company, plain water is best.  However, a basic detergent cleaning solution is ½ cups of detergent (Tide or equivalent) dissolved in one gallon of water.

If mildew is apparent, modify as follow:

  • ½ cup of detergent (Tide or equivalent)
  • 2/3 cups of tri-sodium phosphate (Soilex or equivalent)
  • 1 quart of 5% sodium hypochlorite solution (Clorox or equivalent)
  • 3 quarts of water

After using either solution, ALWAYS rinse thoroughly with clean water!  For other possible solutions to clean your deck around your sunroom, consult maintenance professionals and the manufacture’s manual.

This is the title story in the February issue of Replacement Contractor. The rise of complaint sites and online posts have become a problem for good companies. Seeing the consumer’s gripe, hundreds of people looking for information about a company can be influenced by comments that only show one side of a story.  Many of the sites are un-policed unregulated, and full of negatives. What can companies do to protect themselves against unfair allegations?  We’d love to hear your feedback on how you, as a consumer, use and are influenced by other consumer comments.  Do you always believe what you read?

How Thieves Know When You’re Not Home

Here’s a worthy warning from Techlicious, the website that makes Tech Simple (www.techlicious.com.) Founder Suzanne Kantra writes: “My mother-in-law’s nav system has a button that’s labeled “Go Home.” So after a long day out, she can push one button when she’s ready to head back. But what if someone stole her car? He could press that same button to find out exactly where she lives and he’d know she’s not at home. And if she had a garage door opener, all a thief would have to do is follow the directions home to rob her blind.

To reduce the likelihood that she’ll be victimized by her own technology, I made her “Home” address an intersection near her house, not her actual address. And now she makes sure her nav system is well hidden in the car.

New Earthstone Color for Patio Rooms

I’m Excited by our  New Earthstone Color for Patio Rooms
Earthstone matches the most popular color in the window, siding and gutter industries. Betterliving Aluminum Patio Rooms will continue to be available in White and Desert Sand.

The decision to invest in a new color for Betterliving Patio Rooms was made to compliment the architecture of newer homes. Research shows that homeowners consider major home improvements when they have been in their homes for five years.  The Earthstone hue came into use in prime windows, siding and gutters in new home construction recently, replacing the predominance of white and tan finishes. It is a close match to Terratone – a trademark of Andersen Windows.

When adding an outdoor room or enclosed porch, homeowners prefer to maintain the color scheme of the house.  With the introduction of Earthstone, Betterliving Patio and Sunroom dealers expect that consumers who have preferred a color matched product will have a renewed interest in adding a sunroom.

Do It Yourself Sunrooms: 5 Reasons Why It Might Not Make Sense

  1. Leaks: Don’t take on a sDIY unroom project as a do-it-yourself project, unless you live in an area where it never rains. If you live in an area where it rains, you will be fighting leaks forever.
  2. Permits:  To receive a permit from your local building department, you will have to meet the requirements of a patio room. It will take you many discussions with them to get it designed to satisfy them.
  3. Engineering: How much of a snow load do you have to meet where you are? Will the sunroom be subjected to things falling out of the sky, like pinecones? This will determine the best material to use for the roof panels.
  4. Heating and Cooling: The roof and glass you choose could generate a lot of heat, and the more glass you have, the more heat it will generate. What sort of a climate are you in?
  5. Flashing: The thing to remember when designing a glass enclosure is that it will leak either by condensation or penetration. To avoid having to deal with constant nagging problems provide an exit (weep holes) for these leaks and a built in gutter to channel water to the exterior. Don’t forget flashing where the structure joins the house.

Professional installed manufactured sunrooms may seem high priced, but they have been designed and tested to avoid all of the problems do-it-yourselfers have trouble with.

Sunroom Design Tips – 12 Things to Consider Before Selecting a Sunroom Addition

The design of your home and the climate you live in will determine a lot about how your sunroom will be designed.  Many homeowners want the height and airiness of an A-Frame roof, but these are more costly and sometimes require the addition of a “dormer” to your existing house roof in order to obtain sufficient height for the vaulted ceiling. A studio sunroom, or sloped roof, is the simplest design and can be raised with the addition of transom windows under the roof line.  Sunrooms can also be installed under existing porch roofs.

Energy Tax Credits

Revisions to the New Federal Tax Credits for Residential Renewable Energy Systems:

To help homeowners invest in Renewable Energy systems, the U.S. Government has approved new incentives for the installation of residential systems that provide renewable, solar, green, and alternative energy benefits. The former incentives expired December 31, 2008, and had provided for a 30% Federal Tax credit for any qualified installations with a maximum cap of $2,000.00. The NEW incentives no longer requires the $2,000 cap effective as of January 1, 2009, and maintains up to a 30% tax credit for specified equipment, with the most value going towards solar energy installations. For anyone who needs to file their 2008 tax credit to deduct qualified installed equipment costs, the following link to form 5695 should be helpful, http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f5695.pdf .

WHY WERE WE NAMED A TOP SUNROOM COMPANY?

I was uneasy that Betterliving Sunrooms was named in the November issue of Qualified Remodeler as one of the Top 5 Exterior Contractors in the US. Not that I’m not proud to be included – I am pleased to be recognized as a national sun room leader.

I just am not comfortable having our sales figures published, especially in such a volatile economic climate.
Because sales numbers aren’t really the measure of a company’s success.
I would rather be known as the highest quality sun room on the market.
I would rather be listed for the highest customer satisfaction.
Qualified Remodeler is one of the oldest and most respected journals in the professional home remodeling industry. Over the years we have been a frequent contributor to articles about trends in the sunroom industry. But 2008 was the first year we ever agreed to submit our financial information for consideration to be listed as a national sales leader. I let our marketing department talk me into it. They thought it was important recognition for our sun room division, and an important part of our effort to introduce our products to other companies.
When we made the lists (we were also listed in the Top Manufacturers in the August issue of QR) I decided we won’t do this again. So if you don’t see us there next year, you’ll know why.

Reduce Your Energy Costs with Exterior Solar Shades from Betterliving

George Pastilli, a member of our shipping department for 14 years, stopped me in the hall last week to show me his air conditioning bills. In spite of rising energy costs, his 2008 bill was a lot lower than last year.

Crawford & Brinkman Door & Window Co.

I am proud to announce that Craft-Bilt Manufacturing today named Crawford & Brinkman the exclusive representative for Betterliving products in the Central Illinois area. A fixture in the greater Peoria community, Crawford and Brinkman Door and Window Company of Peoria has been in service for over 50 years. Already specialists in windows, retractable awnings and all types of residential doors, they are known for their professional installation and service.

Crawford and Brinkman president Tom Hoffman says that he is proud to be selected to represent Betterliving products in the Peoria market. “Betterliving focuses on the quality side of the business and so do we,” Hoffman said. “Our customers are like family. We always go back to make sure that all of our customers are completely satisfied, and they are.”

Tom is often recognized locally because he stars in his own television commercials. “I’m so bad at it that people remember me,” Tom told me. If you’re watching TV in Peoria and you see Tom, let me know what you think!

Dog Days of Summer

Our Account Manager, Richard Ball was painting the back wall of his sunroom when his dog, Butterscotch, came into the room and saw that it was raining outside.

So what did Butterscotch do? He immediately went to the window and watched the rain as if he wanted to go outside. By the way, Butterscoth piled up his “toys” by himself and laid his head down on the soft pillow of toys.

For more information visit our Betterliving Sunrooms website. Enjoy your summer!
